1. What makes Luma unique?
To start - we're one of the very rare few Mexican vodka brands, and the only one based out of Tulum.
Luma is also made with fresh pressed sugarcane juice, unlike the vast majority of vodkas which are made of corn, potatoes, or grains. Our use of fresh pressed sugarcane juice not only results in a unique flavor profile, but also certain environmental benefits which are discussed here.
Lastly, Luma is not filtered. Not even once. We refuse to filter away our unique taste, and we believe high quality product should not be filtered.
2. What is cenote water, and why is it special?
A cenote is a sinkhole that results when a collapse of limestone bedrock exposes groundwater. Cenotes are a major geographic feature of Mexico's Riviera Maya and broader Yucatan Peninsula. In fact, there are about 6,000 cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula. Cenotes served as a sacred water source for the Mayans for centuries.
Cenote water was special to us because it is a clear representation of our region, so we wanted to incorporate it into our vodka. Additionally, because cenote water is naturally limestone filtered, it gives the water a "sweeter" taste. When combined with our sugarcane distillate, the results create a spectacular vodka. This is similar to why limestone-filtered water is specifically used for Kentucky Bourbons.
3. Where does Luma's cenote water come from?
Our water comes from an underground cenote in Yalcobá, Yucatan. It is approximately 1h30 away from our home base of Tulum.
4. Is Luma the first Mexican vodka?
No. There are other Mexican vodka brands that came before Luma.
5. How is Luma not considered a rum of it is made from sugarcane?
The legal definition of a rum is a spirit distilled from the fermented sugarcane juice, sugarcane syrup, sugarcane molasses, or other sugarcane by-products at less than 95 percent alcohol by volume (190° proof).
Because Luma is distilled to above 95% ABV, it does not meet the legal definition of rum. Luma instead meets the legal definition of a vodka as it is distilled above 95%.

The idea for Luma Vodka was born in 2021. The business itself was founded in 2024. Read more about our story here.
